Alberta, Canada, red canoes on Lake Louise in Banff National Park.
Decades ago as a hitchhiking hippie I had come here on a cross-Canada backpacking journey. I’d stopped overnight then with no tent just outside a Banff campsite [to save paying a fee], but regretted not having another layer of protection when during the night some unknown beast came sniffing and shuffling around my sleeping bag. I huddled down inside, and no harm occurred, but at sunrise a pack of wolves came running through a field just a few meters away. That night I paid to stay inside the campsite. This photo represents a kind of triumphant return years later as a man of some means to what many consider the world’s most perfect lake.
